Add another to the list of American firsts that you will find in Charleston: America's first museum. The Charleston Museum was founded in 1733. Exhibits focus on all aspects of the history of Charleston and the Lowcountry, with a wealth of artifacts dating back to the colonial-era, as well as exhibits highlighting natural history, Native-American society, African-American experiences, the plantation system and the Civil War period. There is also an impressive display of a whale skeleton dominating the natural history exhibits.

The Museum also operates two historic homes in the Historic District, the Heyward-Washington House and the Joseph Manigault House. Tickets for all three can be purchased together at a discount.

Photography is not allowed within the museum.
Steven's CommentsThe museum offers a large collection, and also displays traveling collections. I was particularly impressed by the silver collection.

We have not visited either of the Historic Homes, however I think they would be interesting. The Manigault House is located across the street from the Museum, and the Heyward-Washington House is located on Church Street in the residential neighborhood South of Broad.

Charles' CommentsI especially enjoyed the Egyptian artifact area and Civil War era artifacts.
